Extra-Curricular Activities

Extra-Curricular Activities

Our extensive ECA programme unlocks diverse learning beyond the classroom - from performances to tournaments, enriching students with over 70 engaging experiences each year.

The Glenealy School extracurricular activity (ECA) program offers our students a vibrant and engaging array of opportunities beyond the regular academic curriculum. Designed to foster holistic development and cater to diverse interests and passions, our program provides a rich selection of activities that inspire creativity, promote physical fitness, encourage teamwork, and cultivate leadership skills.

Training for school teams takes place during ECA time. We have a diverse array of school teams that cater to all abilities. Inter-school fixtures reflect this, with A, B, C & D grades of competitions taking place.

The students showcase their learning from ECAs during assemblies, inter-school competitions, and school and community shows and festivals.

The Glenealy School extracurricular activity program not only enriches the overall educational experience but also fosters a sense of camaraderie, personal growth, and self-confidence. It empowers students to discover their strengths, explore new horizons, and build lifelong friendships. Through these activities, we strive to create a well-rounded learning environment that nurtures every student's potential.

ECAs run termly and are inclusive. Enrolment is based on a first-come, first-served basis and is regardless of ability. Throughout the year, there are over 70 ECAs for the students to choose from. In addition to the ECAs provided by the school, we also have a number of outside providers who offer additional ECAs that they run at Glenealy School.

ESF Explore offers a variety of extracurricular programs designed to engage students and ignite their curiosity. Catering to children from infants to teens, these programs include playgroups, sports, language classes, arts, drama, and STEM learning.

Visual Arts

The visual arts is an integral part of a broad-based curriculum designed to develop the whole child, promoting creativity, originality and imagination. Learning about and through arts is fundamental to the promotion of   critical thinking, problem-solving skills and social interactions. The visual arts are a powerful mode of communication through which students explore and construct a sense of self and develop an understanding of the world around them. Arts provide students with various opportunities and means to respond to their experiences and engage with historical, social and cultural perspectives. The students are stimulated to think and to articulate their thoughts in new ways, and through a variety of media and technologies.

The visual arts curriculum includes access to responding to and creating artworks. Attention is given to the history of art as students are exposed to a range of artists' works from a wide range of cultures, backgrounds and times in history. Students respond to these artworks in various ways, including, but not limited to, creating their own artwork. Students are able to experience access to working with a range of media and techniques including,  but not limited to, bookmaking, ceramics, collage, costume design, drawing, graphic design, digital design, illustration, installation, jewellery, land art, mask making, metalwork, painting, papermaking, performance art, photography, printmaking, sculpture, set design, and textiles.

Performing Arts

The Music and Performing Arts curriculum at Glenealy strives to provide children with opportunities and resources to express their learning through a creative lens. By promoting and developing creative self-expression, presentation skills, collaboration skills, and cultural awareness, children can create meaningful connections and find new and exciting ways to express their curiosity, experiences and unique perspectives of the world around us.

Students engage with the Performing Arts Curriculum as both stand-alone specialist lessons and links to class units of inquiry. Throughout the grades, students can engage in different types of performances, including at assemblies, school fairs, and combined ESF events.

The school runs several performing art ECAs to extend students' talents beyond the classroom and into the community. These include lower school and upper school choirs, an orchestra and an annual school musical.

Students at Glenealy also have access to a wide range of peripatetic instrumental music teachers who visit the school weekly. Through the music teacher, lessons can be arranged with piano, guitar, drums, and violin teachers.

We are committed to promoting a healthy and active lifestyle among our students. Physical Education (PE) plays a vital role in the overall development of our students, fostering their physical, mental, and social well-being. We believe in the importance of physical activity and its positive impact on a student's academic performance. Our PE program is designed to provide a well-rounded education that goes beyond the classroom, promoting physical fitness, sportsmanship, teamwork, and lifelong wellness habits.

Our PE curriculum is diverse. To facilitate this, we use a range of venues, both on campus and within the local community. These include Conduit Road Playground, the Ladies Recreation Club (LRC), Island School, Causeway Bay Sports Ground, and Happy Valley Recreation Ground.

Our staff and curriculum cater to the needs and interests of all students, regardless of their athletic abilities. We strive to create a positive and inclusive atmosphere where everyone feels encouraged and supported to participate. Our students develop essential motor skills, coordination, flexibility, and endurance through various activities such as team sports, dance, gymnastics, yoga, athletics, outdoor and adventurous education, and swimming. They learn different sports' fundamental rules, strategies, and techniques, fostering a love for physical activity and a sense of healthy competition.

Our experienced staff are passionate about inspiring students to lead active and balanced lives. They provide expert guidance, personalised instruction, and constructive feedback to help students reach their full potential. Our teachers also emphasise the importance of sportsmanship, fair play, and respect for oneself and others, instilling valuable life skills that extend beyond sport.

In addition to regular PE classes, we offer various sporting extracurricular activities and a wide range of opportunities for inter-school competitions and performances, further enhancing students' athletic abilities and providing opportunities for them to showcase their talents. These experiences foster teamwork, leadership, discipline, and perseverance, nurturing well-rounded individuals.

We understand that physical education is an integral part of a comprehensive education. It contributes to students' overall well-being, boosts their self-confidence, and enhances their cognitive abilities. By participating in our PE program, students develop a lifelong commitment to an active lifestyle, ensuring a healthier future.
